April 2009 Event

Brilliant night! What makes the YKSoul nights so good is the warm friendly atmosphere.
Two of my non soul mates ventured into the Northern Soul world for the evening could not believe how good a night it was and are clamouring for more.
Keep up the good work YKSoul, looking forward to the All Dayer in August, it’s bound to be a sell out.

Stu

A big thank you from Ken and Caz - brilliant all round night, good spot from guest Kev and all the DJs at YKSoul. Keep up the good work and well done to the ladies as well another good amount.

Ken

February 2009 Event

I would like to thank the YK Soul team for putting on a brilliant Northern Soul night at York St John University on Saturday night.

They do everything for free and they work so hard. A total of £800 was made for charity, and the next one is at the Post Office Club, on April 24, in aid of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

Tickets are available from the De Grey Rooms. Thanks again for a great night.

Janet Murphy, Tadcaster Road, York (from Readers' Letters, Yorkshire Evening Press)

Another brilliant event made even more fantastic by Tommy Hunt. The highlight for me was Tommy giving me a personal rendition of Never Love a Robin, amazing! Truly a living legend.

Stu

Got to agree with you Stu, another fantasic YKSoul event

Mark

Well done to all the DJ’s, and Tommy for singing Loving on a losing side excellent.

Kenny

What can you say about Saturday night other than... brilliant! Well done to all the YKSoul team....looking forward to the next one already... can't wait!
Jinny xx

Just to say a big thanks to the YKSoul lot.
Tommy Hunt is one of the warmest, friendly people we have ever met. We spent a while talking to him & he was happy to sign autographs for both us & for a friend that couldn’t be there. We got a really lovely piccie with him, which we'll post up this week & are both getting framed for our bedroom walls.
For us the night was just topped off by him grabbing the mic & singing for us while on stage.

Well done to the YKSoul lot as well for raising £44,000.00 since 2003, nice one guys.

Kirsty & Dee xx

Just to say Thank you to you and all the others who made Saturday Night a really great event.

I have videoed part of Tommy Hunt singing and doing the raffle (it is my first attempt at editing) and wondered if you and the team would like to see it. I asked Tommy if it was OK to put it on youtube etc and he said very kindly that he did not have a problem with copyright or anything.

I really enjoyed talking to him (what a charming man) he still has that special something even at 75!

Once again Thanks for the great night,

See you at the next one!

All-Dayer: August 2008

Had a great day Steve, nice to put some faces to names, especially nice to meet Suzy & Phil, and the other Sunshine Girls, you guys at yksoul should be proud of yourselves, after all the headaches with organisation everything went to plan, just a fantastic all round day, all the DJ’s supplied the goods, will post me & Dianes playlist up later, once the fog has disappeared

Harry Crosby

Cracking do Steve and the rest of the yksoul crew. Glad to be part of it...and help you raise plenty of money for charity a true genuine cause and not one of these pretend jobbies where they only give a tenner. Great to catch up with Phil R again and the rest of the Dudleeeeeeeee Desperado's. Nice broad spectrum of music. Never got to meet the Crosby's though. What you need is some pedalo's on the lake for next year.

Rob

Thanks for a Top Day/Night.
Well worth the trip from Edinburgh.
All the DJ's played great sets
Plus the Hot Roast Pork Sarni's hit the spot

Simon

Great night great music and great people. Steve. Nick. Marie & Angie plus all the others you did us all proud and if any university officials read this after the killing you made behind the bars yesterday I’m sure the YKsoul crowd would be more than grateful if you donated some of the money that you charged them to rent the rooms to the charity sorry guys & gals had to. Thanks again for letting me be involved in a top class & definitely a day to remember.

Dave smith

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for organising a brilliant event on Saturday. The venue was great and there was a really good atmosphere. Jane & Jill stayed til 2 but I left before then as I was struggling a bit after Friday night!

Thanks to everyone at YKSoul for inviting "The Sunshine Girls" and their Husbands/Partners to the alldayer to DJ and to be a part of this fundraising day. It was great meeting you all, thanks to Steve Bradley for the lovely welcome, we had a fantastic day and a lotta laughs, we will be looking forward to coming back and doing it all again, if ever you should need us, just give us a shout.

"The Sunshine Girls" were proud to play a little part on this day, I have to say that the YKSoul team have worked hard to make this day a success as they do with every event that they put on, They work closely with each other and as a team... WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!!

It was also nice meeting other friends old and new, nice to meet Harry & Di now I can put faces to names, look forward to seeing you again.

Hello to our dear friend Jo Wallace who played a brilliant spot with Paul, great seeing you again girl, and say a Big Hi to Phil too. See you soon.

Well done to all DJ's on the day who kept the show moving perfectly through the day...

Keep in touch Steve look forward to hearing from you soon.....

Suzy and "The Sunshine Girls" xxx

FAB FAB and FAB nothing else can be said , had the most fabulous day and night WELLDONE YKSOUL you couldn’t have wished for any better, great music played in all rooms , just truly wonderful people, it was just great to meet so many of you, all the Sunshine Girls Hi ladies and guys, Steve C, Carole, Eddy G , Sean, Jayne AND I couldn’t believe it when Sharon (munchkinette) turned up with Kev it was fab but of course all my bestest friends you all know who you are it was really hard work drinking for 14 hours but in true DJ Diva Di fashion I managed it.

Dianne Crosby

Enjoyed the Alldayer had a great time socially but was a bit disappointed numbers wise. Been scratching my head trying to work out why... Last one was heaving. Ok this venue was a bit out of town but so what? Good DJ line up + 3 rooms, there should have been something for everyone... cant work it out, hope organisers didnt lose out they deserve better.

Kelvin

This was a really well organised event thank you Steve Bradley and team for inviting us to play.

Neil and I had a pukka day / night plus plenty of laughs in the company of our good friends Gale, Pete, Dave Rivers Stef, Mike, Jan, Gary, Claire, Sean Chapman, Michelle and a nice surprise later when Tracy, Debs and Flanny arrived to join us.

I hope the final total raised for charity was worth the hugh effort the promoters obviously put into making the event the success it was.
Shame you had no control over the weather

Kenny Burrells closing set in the Northern room was superb and ended the evening perfectly

Dolly

Had a really good time at the All Dayer and can only really echo Dollys comments. A very well organised event in every way. Great sound systems in each room, loads of bars and food stalls and even secure storage for the record boxes.

Congrats to Steve Bradley & everyone who was involved in getting such a big project off the ground and putting on such a great All Dayer.

After an early evening appointment to double-deck with Dolly in the chill out room, I had a few hours to enjoy the event before I played a few in the Northern Room from 11pm.

Neil Jones

A big and massive THANK YOU to Steve Bradley & the YKSoul crew for the invitation to be part of the Alldayer and for the fabulous welcome we had when we walked through the doors. We all had a ball, even the weather couldn't dampen our party mood, it was great to get the Sunshine Girls & lads together, especially our Suzy (even having a glass of wine) as we don't always get be in the same place at the same time.  A big thanks to everyone who came and supported this Charity day.  It was a great venue, and like someone has already mentioned pedalo's would be nice next year LOL.
It was also nice to put name to faces, and see loads of peeps who had travelled from the Midlands and Manchester.

Jane (Sunshine Girls)

Well what can I say... YKsoul has done it again! What a fantastic day... I really enjoyed it. The music was brilliant... something there for everyone... had quite a long spell in the Modern Room and enjoyed dancing to a few of my favourite chooooons!! One of the highlights was meeting Lorraine Silver and chatting to her... I used to love dancing to 'Lost Summer Love' when I was 17 and just hitting the scene, was amazed when she told me she wasn't aware of the popularity of the song until 1986!!!  Loved the 'chill out room' some really great choons being played in there! All in all it was a great day and Steve & the gang deserve a massive pat on the back for organising such a big event... well done & thank you!!!

Jinny xx

Big Up to the YKSoul crew for a big success & I hope the final total does you proud. I'm not gonna say a lot, cos most of it's been said already but, yes there's always a BUT, next time could you please order pleasant weather for the full day, as it was excellent being able to stand in the quadrangle (reminded me of school & sneaking a fag in secret corners) & move from one side to the other & be able to hear all the rooms, even though we were plagued by the Kamikaze Wasp Air display team.

Lovely big Northern room but too light for me, everyone could see how portly I was & it's not a pretty sight in daylight, so excursions there were limited to bar duties till sundown, however the chill-out room was excellent & with music to match, so my tip for the next one is blackout curtains & the floor will be rocking early doors then.

Spot

Hi Steve Angie and Co thanks for a brill day all the team from Barnsley enjoyed it and had a really great time i thought you all got everything perfect and nothing was missing all of you deserve a giant pat on the back for putting nearly a full years effort in to this event and you all will be able to look back with pride what you achieved.Yes there may have been a few teathing problems but nothing to take the shine off a fantastic day in great company and alittle bit of something music wise for everybody. Cheers also for letting me be a part of this wonderfull event and it was a buzz to play to the crowd and i hope i can be a part of the next events you promote i will post my play list soon but i feel a bit intimidated at the moment with Niel Mick h and the other big hitters posting theres but ill post soon once again thanks and see you all soon

Yocky & joy.

Hi Steve... Thankyou for inviting the sunshine crew to York, we all had a truly fantastic day & night it was so nice meeting all you fellow soulsourcers hope its not too long before we all meet again. Hope you made loads of money for the charity Steve

Helen(Sunshine Girls)

I really enjoyed the entire day / night, as much as the last one. Great company, great laughs, fab to see old (and new) friends. Enjoyed the chill out room and thought the main room dancefloor was excellent

Carole

What a fantastic day, got there nice and early 1 o'clock and it only took 5 hours. 3 excellent rooms in a first class venue with posh bogs and a nice dining facility plus the hog roast outside. A nice friendly atmosphere all day and night. So a big well done to Steve, Mare and all the team who did a magnificent job in organising this, hopefully you've raised lots of cash. Michelle and I had a great time and even got some socialising.

Sean Chapman

Had a brilliant day, even better than expected!!! All your hard work paid off.

Highlights were the modern room sets from Sean Chapman, Ade Stelling and especially Mark Dawson - you can't stop now mate!

Thanks to Sean Livesy for playing Edwin Starr's 'Running Back And Forth' soooooo much better than the other side!! Pity there were only 4 people in the Chill Out Bar to hear it.

Ricky

Just have to agree with everything thats been said, another great do by the yksoul crowd

These guys are diamonds & do so much for worthy causes.

Also a big thanks to my bessie mate Steve for putting me & Dee up for the night, love ya to bits.

Kirsty

Hope the fundraising went well & you got to enjoy it, last time I saw you were trying to find accommodation for someone so I guess it never stops for you.

Cheryll

P.S. Jane & Jill have both asked me to let you know how much they enjoyed it too and to say thank you.

Really fantastic to meet Jo & her other half Phil, lovely couple, had me laughing, especially about the caterpillar Music wise I have to say Jo & Paul absolutely nailed. You played all my fave tunes, my legs are aching from dancing. Was great having the big screen with all the piccies & videos, even if that piccie of me was hilarious.

Comments from event 11 November:

Freya and Lydia were fab – go girls!!  Always a good atmosphere.

Suzie – brilliant night loved all the music and particularly love the old images screened.

Although I m definitely a Northern girl, it is good to have Motown as well for those not too familiar wit Northern Soul, however a full hour of Motown was too much for me, as I don’t dance to it.. But it gave me a good chance to cool down ready for the next Northern spot.

Mike - Enjoyed the night, as I did your last event, love the venue.

Nice to hear some Motown, very enjoyable night.

Madeleine – good venue, great music, drink prices very reasonable, enjoyed the graphics, some DJs played the music too loud.

Nice to see two young females DJing definitely something that should be encouraged.

An excellent night.

Congratulations all .Neal , the pa and sound quality was 2nd to none -one of the best, if not the best I've ever DJ'd on.  It was particularly nice to take a guest DJ spot which I really enjoyed ,  I have some interesting stories to tell from the constant 'what was that record you played' , including a house DJ who couldn't believe his ears when he heard the Majestics and now wants to use it for a house sample!!! I couldn't have posssibly imagined even in my wildest dreams that 4 years ago when I had the idea, called it YKSoul /spoke to Nick and we did our 1st event at the City Screen for Teenage Cancer (with Tony Hatfield as guest) raising I think £400 , that you would become the biggest and best soul charity promoters and have now raised almost over £33,000 -all for charity and taken yksoul from strength to strength . You should, rightly so, be very proud of what you achieved last nite. Andy

Just a quickie to thank everyone who came out en masse to support the DEBRA charity in York. Hats off to all the promoters who did a top job of promoting the dayer - the whole event was well run from beginning to end and they made shed loads of cash to boot. The DJs provided some awesome entertainment and I had a 'triffic time. Jo

Great all-dayer Jo it was the last minute decision but well worth the trip. Great Twinky Dinky records throughout the day, different crowd of people I normally see, the floor packed all night, I see Russ signing autographs and shaking hands with the punters, also it was nice to see Soul Source faces Richy, Jamie, Lagerlout, little confused lads why were you wearing ladies undoes? Looking forward to the next one, Billy.

Just to say what a fantastic day the All Dayer was on the 23rd July .I spent  most if my time in the smaller rare 60s room, but did walk round everywhere a few times; everyone seemed to have a superb time (I haven't spoken to anybody who did not enjoy it immensely. (When you needed some Timothy Taylor's beer (pure nectar)! the pub over the road were playing Northern, Crossover and modern, CDs - big shout to Helene the Landlady. I also achieved a lifelong ambition and had my photo taken with Sue Warwick and some guy called Russ Winstanley (only joking the man walks on water in my eyes)! GREAT DAY, GREAT RESULT FOR CHARITY, NO BOTHER AT ALL ONCE AGAIN WELL DONE TO ALL INVOLVED AT YKSOUL.  Tony Coleby

Well done lads another good soul event, Kenneth Wallis.

Just a quickie to thank everyone who came out en masse to support the DEBRA Charity Alldayer in York. Hats off to the promoters who did a top job of promoting the dayer - the whole event was well run from beginning to end and they made shed loads of cash for the DEBRA charity. The deejays provided some awesome entertainment and I had a 'triffic time.  I've posted snaps - go see. There will be another one in the future - not to be missed. Jo Wallace on www.soulsource.co.uk

All dayers at your age! Good to see you are still giving it some.

York All Dayer Sat 23 July-BIG THANKS from Martint (London)

Well done Andy, all the feedback I've seen on this has been tremendous, Martin

Soul in the city London - first Wednesday of every 3rd with guest Jo Wallace. All welcome!

Just want to say a big thank-you to the invite from the YKSoul crew. It was an organised, well-run event fir a very worthy cause and you should all be very proud. It was an honour for us to open the proceedings at 2:00 in the Main Room (though I run it fairly close with setting off late)! An unexpected bonus of getting another 45 mins due to other people delayed meant we had while 3:30! I must admit even that went quickly and didn't want to come off. I'll post up my plays, not in any order as usual, and I'm sure Rich will follow suit when he surfaces!

* Eddie Foster - I Never Knew - IN

* Lee Andrews - I've Had It - Crimson

* Mickie Champion - What Good Am I - Musette

* Continental Four - The Way I Love You - Jay Walking

* Ruby Andrews - Just Loving You - Zodiac

* Nicky Newarkers - Woman - Mercury

* Soul Bros Inc - Pyramid - Golden Eye

We decided to play some up-tempo classics to start with. I always feel that long events take some time to get going, so Me & Rich decided to get the party started and get people dancing from the off. It worked out pretty well. Jamie.

Congratulations to all involved with yesterdays all-dayer in York.  Great venue, superb line-up of DJs, brilliant atmosphere and music - and lots of money raised for such a good cause.  Keep up the good work. KTF. Yvonne from Knaresborough (Sunday 24 July 2005)

Luv the old soul films u show. Roz, Haxby.

How can you book YKSoul DJs ? Kurt (Scarborough)
Just email Andy andybellwood@hotmail.com  with date and details and he'll sort out with Nick and Steve. If billed as YKSoul  DJs all they ask is that any fee is donated to a recognised charity , which they will then try and match via 'Partners in Giving'.

I've supported all your events since the first ones at The City Screen for Teenage Cancer Trust. They just get better and better. Keep it up your doing a brilliant job. Jo

St Johns was incredible. It was the best night of Northern Soul I've been to in ages. I never stopped dancing. Carl

Nick, Steve and Andy. We love the music and it’s all for charity. Well done. Caz

YKSoul charity soul nights have fantastic soul clips and graphics projected onto screens behind the stage. Could you please let me know which company provides these for your events? Terry T.

The graphics and archive soul film are very much part of the success of YKSoul's charity fund raising and branding. We have expertise to support us with the design and presentation. As far as we know this is not available commercially.

Are Andy, Nick and Steve DJing anywhere else soon? Johno
As a non YKSoul DJ Steve is a resident at the Groves - details on site. Nick and Andy are playing the Brighton All dayer on Easter Sunday (see 'news'  and SoulVille at The Baby Jupiter, Leeds on the first Friday in either May or June). As soon as details are known we'll add to the site. They’re also playing at the Northern Soul event of the year -Whitby Soul Weekender in July-details on site.

Your Northern Soul events are second to none, so professional yet so welcoming and everyone is so friendly. When is the next one ? Harry from Fulford
C
heck out the YKsoul website under Forthcoming YKSoul events .The next one is our massive charity All-dayer at the Moat House Hotel on 23 July. There’s also some other good soul events organised by others in and around York. Again details are on the website.

Some of the Northern and modern stuff you are now playing is streets ahead of what we hear elsewhere as we can dance to it  - keep playing the vinyl. Dave (Strensall)

How can I buy some of the stuff you play? Clive Tyler
If you’re asking if we are selling, sorry. However a lot is on CD and can be bought from places like Track Records in York or Jumbo in Leeds. As to vinyl,  keep looking on our website links - we already have Pat Brady Records (Leeds), another good one is Sean Chapman Records or Steve Jeffries - smoothsoulinc@ntlworld.com  tel 0116 221 6326 . For everything Northern Soul-CDs, new vinyl, DVDs, books, nsoul mag,  venues, weekenders, all nighters and so on  you can't beat www.goldsoul.co.uk .Regards, Andy

Hi Andy all the best with your alldayer, Steve C (soulaid)

Hi Andrew
Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. Firstly got to say what an awesome day staff, venue, hotel and company were all truly unbelievable. Had a cracking all round day. It really put my faith back in Northern Soul. NO POLITICS. People actually go there to have a good time rather tahn moan all day. So back to what I was saying thanks again for making us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Won't be able to make your next date as it is the same night as our doo at Salwick unfortunately, but keep us informed because we would like to make the trip over again.
C ya all soon, Geoff & Sue Claxton
